How Many Post Office Closures were due to the Horizon Scandal?

by Mark Smith on 14 January, 2024

We are pleased to see that the Post Office Horizon scandal is finally getting the attention it deserves from politicians. Ministers from all Parties were too naive and trusting of the lies they were being fed by the Post Office and Fujitsu. It is bosses there, not sub-postmasters running Post Office branches, or Posties, that should be held to account.

In addition to the gross miscarriage of justice in accusing innocent sub-postmasters of fraud, how many of the 4,000 Post Offices closed since 2000 were done so because they drove people out of business, or just to feel it was not worth running a Post Office anymore. And the Post Office continues to mislead the public and operators as we saw with relocation and then closure of the Scott Arms Post Office, last year. They failed to provide the facilities they promised customers, or the support they promised the shop that reluctantly agreed to take on some Post Office services. We are also demanding answers on why the closure and relocation of our local Post Office was so badly managed.

We are still encouraging people to write to the Post Office asking them to restore our Post Office services, either at the old Newton Road site, or one of the other empty premises at the Scott Arms junction.

As we saw last year, there is still a malign culture amongst managers at the Post Office that needs to be rooted out. They continue to mislead Parliament, the public. Things will only improve when the current Post Office bosses swept aside and replaced with managers who will work for customers benefit. Many of the Post Office bosses should be facing criminal charges and have their assets seized, not be rewarded with honours.
